One For All, All For One

One For All

Most of what we've said so far about the patrol involves just one person - you the Patrol Leader. You have a pretty big job in the patrol. Each member looks to you to set the example, lead the way, and keep everyone happy. In fact, the more you learn about your job, the more you'll start to think that the job is impossible. Well, it's not.

Patrol Spirit and teamwork are the things that you are trying to build into the patrol. You are the one who has to take the lead in building the patrol. Your patrol is counting on you, and your SPL and Scoutmaster are counting on you. But, as I've said all along, you are not alone! As the Patrol Leader, you are also part of the patrol. Everything you do should be done for all of the members of the patrol, including yourself.

In fact, every member of the patrol should have the same attitude. Each one does his job for all of the members of the patrol. That's how teamwork is built. That's how you keep the group together through thick and thin. If you do your job for all of them, pretty soon, you'll find the other part of Patrol Spirit and teamwork is easier to see.

All For One

You see, when every member of the patrol does what he's supposed to for everyone in the patrol, everyone in the patrol is more likely to do their job for him. When you, as Patrol Leader, do a good job and help make your patrol the best, your patrol will reward you by working that much harder.

Once the patrol has developed a real sense of teamwork and Patrol Spirit, you'll find much of the time you won't even have to ask someone to do a job. It will get done, without complaint. That's because every member of the patrol has learned that individuals only benefit from the patrol when the patrol benefits from individual members.

Of course, there's another part of this "all for one" thing. That is, the patrol will be ready and willing to help each of its members whenever they need it. They'll stick together no matter what they face. When you help the patrol complete a requirement, the patrol will be ready and willing to help you complete a requirement. That's truly "All for One, One for All"!
